As GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy gain traction for diabetes management and weight loss, an emerging concern has sparked discussion: Could these drugs harm dental health? A growing number of users and dental professionals report a cluster of oral issues, informally dubbed “Ozempic teeth,” prompting experts to sound the alarm.
Catrise Austin, a cosmetic dentist and author, notes that while not an official clinical diagnosis, “Ozempic teeth” has become a catch-all term for sudden dental decay, sensitivity, and even tooth loss in patients on GLP-1 therapies. Other reported symptoms include dry mouth, enamel erosion, inflamed gums, and cracked or loose teeth. The phenomenon isn’t limited to Ozempic; related drugs like tirzepatide (Mounjaro), liraglutide (Saxenda), and dulaglutide (Trulicity) may yield similar side effects.
How GLP-1 Drugs Impact Oral Health
Austin highlights several mechanisms behind the dental problems. Reduced saliva flow, a common complaint, disrupts the mouth’s natural defense: Saliva neutralizes acids and protects enamel, so its depletion raises decay and gum disease risks. Dry mouth symptoms include thirst, difficulty swallowing, and cracked lips.
Additionally, FDA data shows 16% to 20% of Ozempic users experience nausea, and 5% to 9% vomit. Repeated exposure to stomach acid erodes enamel and heightens sensitivity. Appetite suppression can also lead to nutrient deficiencies—vitamins like C, D, and B complex are vital for gum health—while some patients neglect oral hygiene during illness, accelerating decay.

Ehsan Ali, a board-certified physician, emphasizes the link between oral and overall health, warning that poor dental hygiene may raise risks for infections, inflammation, and even heart disease. To mitigate risks:
- Stay hydrated to combat dry mouth, and use saliva-promoting rinses or sugar-free gum.
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, avoiding severe caloric restriction.
- Stick to oral hygiene routines by brushing, flossing, and avoiding acidic/sugary snacks.
- If vomiting occurs, rinse with water and baking soda before brushing to neutralize acid.
- Austin adds that avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine can alleviate dry mouth.
